Special Olympics is a global organization that serves athletes with intellectual disabilities working with hundreds of thousands of volunteers and coaches each year. Since the establishment of Special Olympics in 1968, the number of people with and without intellectual disabilities who are involved with the organization has been growing, but the unmet need to reach more people with intellectual disabilities is staggering.
In March 2019, Abu Dhabi hosted the 2019 Special Olympics World Games, making it the first place in the Middle East-North Africa Region to be host of a Special Olympics World Games. Today, the legacy of Special Olympics continues and PHTT is proud to partner with them for its conference on the health of people of determination. As a part of this collaboration, Special Olympics will be delivering a workshop at the conference to empower and educate our audience regarding intellectual disabilities.
The workshop will introduce the Special Olympics organisation and the active role it plays in the lives of people with intellectual disabilities worldwide, as well as in the UAE. The audience will participate in an educational session that will raise awareness on how to speak about, and to, people with Intellectual Disabilities. This will cover the Do’s and Don’ts and communication etiquette. Further, the workshop will also cover the different programs that SO UAE runs in the country to enrich the lives of people with ID and how we as individuals can contribute and play a major role in creating a more inclusive society.
